History

According to the legends, Karaburun is the land where the first olive was grown by Athena and also where the narcissus flower, named after Narcissus, appeared for the first time. It is one of the spotless points of the Aegean where you can see every shade of blue and green. Karaburun, which is assumed to be the birthplace of the famous poet Homer, is also home to many mythological stories.

Besides its nature being unspoiled, Karaburun is a historical region that started from the Chalcolithic Age and was one of the richest cities during the Ionian Civilization. The town, which was called CAPO CALABERNO in the old ages with the literal meaning of “Coal Nose”, took the name of Karaburun in time. It was taken by Caka Bey in 1320 and started to be ruled by Turks since the presence of Aydınoğulları in the region. Then it was taken over by the Ottomans in 1415, occupied by the Greeks in 1919 and regained its freedom on September 17, 1922 under the state of Turkey.
